This is one of those cities that I have yet to hear a bad thing about. Between the weather, the beaches, the food and... the weather, you really cannot go wrong. I have Sabra from The Lonely Wife project telling us all about her love for this city. Check back this afternoon for part two of "I Love My City" San Diego, with Tammy from Lemons, Avocados & the Bay.
I've lived in San Diego for almost 6 glorious years. Me and the Husband moved here from San Francisco, which is one of my favorite cities in the world, but nothing competes with the weather in San Diego.
San Diego has some pretty good eats, but I have a few I frequent. Favorite date night joints are: Tratorria y Trulli for the best Italian (it’s Bill Murray’s favorite spot too and if you’re lucky like me you’ll sit at a table right behind his and breath in the famous).
Cucina Urbana for the scene and the best fancy pizza. Make reservations weeks in advance or do what we do and go for happy hour on Thursday nights when the pizza is also half off!
Girl’s night out at Craft & Commerce in Little Italy – they serve giant adult punch bowls to share with your girlfriends! Or boyfriends :)
Beach Grass Café in Solano Beach is our go-to for breakfast/brunch. There’s usually a wait on the weekends, so call ahead and put your name on the list. The breakfast food is absurdly good. You're likely to find the veggie benedict, french toast, a blackberry muffin and a grapefruit man-mosa in my vicinity. (Man-mosas = giant mimosas. Not for the faint hearted).
I like to hit up the boutiques and vintage shops in Hillcrest for unique goods and Fashion Valley for commercial goods. And Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach is super fun to browse through if you’re into interior design.
One hidden gem in San Diego is the Del Mar dog beach. Not that it’s really hidden (in fact, it’s usually populated to the max), but it’s definitely our favorite place to take The Monster (our Great Dane). He likes to frolic in the ocean with all the other monsters.
When I have visitors, three places I insist on taking them are (1) Balboa Park. Everybody needs to rent one of those group bike things and ride through the park. It’s hilarious and super fun. There are also museums and art and architechture.
(2) Gaslamp Quarter on a Saturday night because it’s so ridiculously packed with twenty-somethings wearing shirts as dresses. Definitely a sight to see and you can hit the clubs if nightlife is your thing.
(3) The beach! We’re surrounded by it and it’s my favorite place on earth. You can’t come to San Diego and not dig your toes into the sand.
A perfect day in San Diego for me would be a long hike through Torrey Pines and a trip to the farmer’s market, all you can drink Sangria by the beach, and cuddling on the couch with my favorite people and animals.
One neighborhood I'd love to live in is North Park because it's central to everything, there’s food and shopping in walking distance and the houses actually have some character to them as opposed to the typical tract homes in Southern California.
My favorite season in the city is summer. It’s never too hot in San Diego (or too cold for that matter), so summer time mean perfect beach/biking/running/drinks on the patio weather.
If I could describe San Diego in three words they would be relaxed, idyllic and active. You can wear flip flops almost anywhere – although I’m extremely opposed to this trend – and even if you’re not prone to physical activity, you’ll want to pick up an outdoorsy hobby just to be outside. Mine is drinking beer and getting a tan.
My favorite thing about San Diego is the weather. I know I’m being annoyingly repetitive, but trust me you guys, there’s a reason we pay a sunshine tax here. It’s beyond gorgeous.
Although I love San Diego, if I could move to one other city tomorrow it would be San Francisco, but only if I were rich enough to afford a parking spot. I would also pick up and move to Florence for a year. There’s just something so appealing about that city.
Whew! This was a long post and I congratulate you if you got through it. Thanks for having me Lara!
